High Class Call Girls, review: 'heartbreaking and non-judgmental'

The internet has transformed the old businesses: shops, taxis, post, and it has had just as dramatic an effect on the oldest profession of them all. Through apps and websites, buyers can easily find women (and men) who will sell them exactly what their hearts – and other parts of them – desire.

High Class Call Girls (Channel 4) introduced two privately educated escorts in their twenties, Emily B and Cookie Jane, who relied on a website, Adultwork, for their livelihoods. They waited for their phones to light up with news of another booking. At up to £500 per hour, you could see why they were tempted. Shot almost entirely in the women's tiny Mayfair flat, this film had a claustrophobic intensity that reflected their lives; a compelling portal into the grimy real life behind the internet's shiny facades.

At first I thought the filming had been staged. The camera focused on a closed bedroom door while the women went about their noisy business on the other side. The scenes that followed assured us that the footage was baldly authentic. Emily and Cookie showered and then prepared for the next punter. Engorged breasts and lips stared out, a challenge to the viewer that stretches back through the Demoiselles and Olympia and far beyond. Both women claimed to enjoy the work but always returned to the money. We saw them stuff fat wedges of pink notes into envelopes, luxuriating in it.

The programme's strength was to answer questions as they came to mind. Who were the men on the other end of the transaction? One, his face hidden, explained that he loved his family but no longer had sex with his wife. "He's just lonely, " said Cookie. Another sent a message explaining that he was into "financial domination". "I want you to rape my wallet, " he wrote.
